NFC SOUTH

Bounty NewsWritten by Warren Brown

There is one division in football that has sent a team to the conference championship every year since realignment in 2002. That division happens to be the NFC South. From the Buccaneers to the Saints, the NFC South is arguably the best division in the NFL. Considering both of these characteristics, choosing a clear-cut winner is often a difficult task. Intense competition, and inconsistent play results in many “upsets” throughout the season. Nonetheless, after much deliberation I have decided on my prediction for the turbulent “seas” of our division. (PICKS NOT TAKING INTO ACCOUNT INJURY)....more

Gaines Adams - Expected Production

Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version
Bounty NewsThe Bucs drafted DE Gaines Adams in the first round this year. He's touted as the best DE in this draft class and a top end pass rusher. Draft picks are always long-term propositions but fans inevitably was an immediate bang-for-the-buck out of their draft picks. Last year when Gradkowski started playing I looked at what fans can/should expect from a rookie QB and what that level of play means for the future of the player. This year, let's take a look at what we can expect from Adams and what his current year performance likely means in terms of his overall career trajectory.

Gradkowski Still Hopeful

Bounty NewsFrom The Orlando Sentinel

TAMPA -- A lot of Tampa Bay coaches gushed about the play -- and potential -- of rookie quarterback Bruce Gradkowski last fall. Then came some developments, starting with an ugly run of four consecutive late-season defeats en route to a 4-12 record.

First, Gradkowski was benched in favor of Tim Rattay. Then Chris Simms was given a contract extension. In March the Bucs signed free agent Jeff Garcia. The same day, they traded for veteran Jake Plummer, who promptly announced his retirement.

And Luke McCown (zero passes in two years) still is around.

For Gradkowski, 24, there was no mistaking the message......

Wild History Between Bucs and Panthers

Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version
Bounty NewsFrom The Houston Chronicle

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — While they have only been in the same division for five seasons, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Carolina Panthers sure have a lot of stories to tell.

The rivalry has produced last-second finishes, the first blocked extra point to force overtime in NFL history and a war of words — between a kicker and a punter.

Even the cheerleaders aren't safe when these two teams meet.

The O-Line May Actually Improve

Bounty Newsfrom TampaBay.com

It has become something of a running joke around these parts - the annual futile effort to upgrade the offensive line.

It's a unit that has consistently failed to keep quarterbacks healthy or sustain a running game. Just ask spleenless Chris Simms or Cadillac Williams, who can't seem to get out of park.

Kelly Back in the Fold

Bounty NewsFrom The Orlando Sentinel

TAMPA -- The Tampa Bay Buccaneers used free agency and the draft to address their drop-off on defense from last season, but an equally significant development may have occurred Tuesday.

Brian Kelly was back.

Kelly, a 10th-year cornerback who missed all but two games of the 2006 season with turf toe, participated in organized team activities for the first time this offseason. After practice, Kelly fended off rumors he would boycott minicamp next month and training camp in July because of displeasure with his contract.

"I don't play that game," said Kelly, whose 20 career interceptions rank seventh in team history. "That doesn't get you where you need to get, and I'm tired of the speculation."

Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version
Bounty NewsTAMPA - Former Tampa Bay tight end Ron Hall, a six-year starter who ended his NFL career in 1995 with Detroit, died Saturday at his home in Costa Rica, the Buccaneers have confirmed. He was 43.

Details of Hall’s death are sketchy, but his mother told the Bucs he died of natural causes.

Hall was a fourth-round draft choice out of Hawaii in 1987 and he earned a starting job in his second pro season under Coach Ray Perkins, catching 39 passes in 1988. He retained his starting job for five more seasons before joining the Lions in 1994.

Hall retired following the 1995 season with 230 catches for 2,609 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Garcia Won't Relish Backup Role

Bounty Newsfrom TampaBay.com

TAMPA - Jeff Garcia signed with the Eagles last year knowing full well Donovan McNabb would be the starting quarterback in Philadelphia.

What Garcia learned later is that sitting on the bench would drive him to utter misery.

"Even though we were winning, it was different being on the sideline, " Garcia said Monday while addressing a group of prominent local business leaders. "It wasn't anything I showed in the locker room or with my teammates. I wasn't a problem or anything. It's just that I wasn't having fun playing the game anymore. I was not enjoying it."

Brian Kelly's "Threat"

Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version
Bounty NewsTaking a page from Keenan McCardell back in 2004, it is possible that Buc CB Brian Kelly may attempt to hold out in 2007.

There is no concrete evidence of this....yet.

Kelly will be entering his 10th season with Tampa Bay, and he has made it abundantly clear that he is not altogether enamoured with his current deal.....
